Leskovac homemade ajvar has received a certificate from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) registering its appellation of origin, the regional chamber of commerce in the southern Serbian town has announced.

The ajvar from Leskovac was registered under the Lisbon Agreement. It received a certificate on April 5 and is the third product from Serbia to be registered under the system.

The certificate gives the makers an important tool in the future marketing of their product, the Chamber of Commerce said in a release.

The Leskovac ajvar, produced in a traditional manner, protected its name and geographical origin with the Serbian Intellectual Property Office last year.

The WIPO registration is valid in 28 countries which are signatories of the Lisbon Agreement, seven of which are EU member states. These countries have constituted a special union within the Union for the Protection of Industrial Property.

They have taken on the obligation of protecting, each in their own territory, the geographical origin of products from other countries in accordance with the terms of the agreement.
