A Serb suspected of war crimes in the former Yugoslavia has confessed to Spanish police that he killed more than 100 Muslims, the daily El Pais reported Thursday.

A Serb suspected of war crimes in the former Yugoslavia has confessed to Spanish police that he killed more than 100 Muslims, the daily El Pais reported Thursday.

"I killed more than 100 Muslims and burned their bodies," Veselin Vlahovic, 40, told police after his arrest near the eastern cityof Alicante on Monday.

"Why? Because they killed my wife and children. And I'll tell you one thing: I do not repent," the daily quoted the man dubbed the "Monster of Grbavica" as saying.

Vlahovic moved to Spain after escaping from a Podgorica prison in 2001. Spanish police said he was wanted on several international arrest warrants as well as by Spain, where he is suspected of crimes including violent robberies.

Bosnian prosecutors said Wednesday they would ask Spain to extradite Vlahovic.

The man is facing charges for the murder, rape, abuse and torture of non-Serbs in the Sarajevo neighborhood Grbavica, Boris Grubesic, a spokesman for the Bosnian prosecutor's office told reporters in Sarajevo.

Vlahovic was born in Niksic, Montenegro, and came to Sarajevo in 1986 as a boxer. He worked as a bouncer in local bars until the beginning of the 1992-95 Bosnia war.

When the war began, he became a member of paramilitary formations in Grbavica.

Vlahovic told Spanish police he had headed a group known as the White Angels, which raped numerous Muslim women.

"I do not repent anything I did," El Pais quoted the man as saying. "Why should I repent? That was war, and these things happen in wars," Vlahovic said
