New Romanian party UNPR elects leaders

The UNPR was formed by independent lawmakers who left the ranks of the Social Democratic Party.

 The country's newest political party, the National Union for the Progress of Romania (UNPR), elected its leaders Saturday .

At the helm will be former Labour Minister Marian Sarbu. Defence Minister Gabriel Oprea will be executive president, while former Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu will serve as honourary chairperson.

The UNPR was formed by independent lawmakers who left the ranks of the Social Democratic Party.
