Istanbul's 10th Criminal Court  accepted the indictment stemming from an alleged coup plan, the so-called Sledgehammer security operation.

The indictment covers 196 suspects, including former senior generals, such as Cetin Dogan, the former chief of the First Army; former land forces commander, General Aytac Yalman; former air forces commander, General Ibrahim Firtina; and the former naval forces commander, Admiral Ozden Ornek.

All had retired by 2004, but the plot allegedly was hatched in 2003, with their participation.

The plan envisioned a systematic spreading of social chaos via various armed operations, including assassinations of prominent religious leaders, journalists and academicians.

It also called for the bombings of key mosques, to trigger military intervention.
