Croatia has succeeded in provisionally closing a further two chapters in the country's negotiations with the EU. At the meeting of the Accession Conference at Deputies level on 27 July, the European Union and Croatia have moved on to a provisional agreement on financial control and food safety.
Since the start of the negotiations in 2005, thirty-three chapters have been opened, of which 22 have been provisionally closed.
The meeting was chaired by Ambassador De Ruyt, Permanent Representative of Belgium, who led the European Union delegation, with Michael Leigh, Director General for Enlargement representing the Commission.
Mr Leigh noted that several difficult chapters - such as those with financial implications and those on Competition and Judiciary and fundamental rights - were to be dealt with in the coming months, and that it was in Croatia's very hands to set the pace of the negotiations by fulfilling the outstanding benchmarks on time.
