Hungary has called in the Croatian company Foton doo to do an aerial survey of the area contaminated by the toxic mud that spilled from an aluminium plant on Monday, in order to establish the extent of the ecological catastrophe.

Villages of Kolontar and Devecser in western Hungary had been flooded on Monday with sludge and toxic waste from the reservoir of a nearby alumina plant, whose dam had burst after days of heavy rain.

Several people died and hundreds were evacuated while the government declared a state of emergency. Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orban, has declared some of the areas hit by the torrent as no longer inhabitable.

The latest reports show that the extremely corrosive substance has reached the Mosoni-Danube, a southern branch of the Danube river, the British Guardian writes.
