The maritime affairs ministry on Monday afternoon announced the civil mobilisation of merchant seamen serving in the domestic coastal shipping sector, following a decision by a union representing the latter to declare another 48-hour strike hours earlier.

The strike, patterned on rolling 48-hour industrial actions, has continued for the past seven days. (ANA-MPA)

"Unfortunately, the intransigence of both sides and the display of social irresponsibility have led to another deadend, and the continuation of the strike.

The result of these actions has caused a dire social need, particularly for the public health, due to the shortages of pharmaceuticals and medical services towards sensitive populations in our islands," Minister Yiannis Diamantidis said in a statement.
