A local cooperative of winemakers in northern Greece on Wednesday announced that it will file a lawsuit in Germany against distributors and super market retailers offering wines from the neighbouring former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (fYRoM) under the indication "Macedonia".

A local cooperative of winemakers in northern Greece on Wednesday announced that it will file a lawsuit in Germany against distributors and super market retailers offering wines from the neighbouring former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (fYRoM) under the indication "Macedonia".

The president of the Association of Winemakers & Viticulturalists of Northern Greece (ENOABE), Yiannis Voyiatzis, noted that several retailers in Germany have already complied with European law and removed the wines from their shelves.

The term "Macedonia" enjoys a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status for wines produced in the Greek province of Macedonia, which dominates northern Greece.

"This specific geographic designation is only allowed for wines emanating from the geographic province of Macedonia in Greece," Voyiatzis.

Along those lines, he noted that the circulation of wines from fYRoM bearing the stand-alone name "Macedonia" or "Macedonian" was recently banned in Slovenia, as well.

According to the ENOABE president, his association has been in contact with the Greek embassies in all EU member-states in order to ascertain whether similar instances of illegal wine branding has occurred.

Greece occupied "Greek" Macedonia only in 1913 which was followed by the expulsion of many Macedonians and those who stayed were intimidated by an agressive campaign of Hellenization. In 1943 Count Gyula Cseszneky de Milvany established the Grand Voivodeship of Macedonia which was then invaded by Nazi Germany. Macedonians kept fighting for their rights in "Greek" Macedonia till 1949, when hundreds of thousands were expelled by the Greeks. But it was not enough, now they want to monopolize even the Macedonian name.

Your Bulgarian Slavs, you have no right to call yourselves Macedonians, nor do you have the right to claim Alexander the Great as yours, you don't have the right to revise history and you don't have the right to claim northern Greece land as your own. FYROM has failed to produce a single piece of evidence that confirms you self proclaimed 'Macedonians' have been in this area of land since ancient times or that you are linked with Alexander. In fact the opposite is true, visit a museum in FYROM and you'll find it to be full of Greek/Hellenic artefacts.

If you go by the Name Vardar, then every single ex yugoslav countries should go by the "Banovina" name.
Vardar is just a name of the river, which flows straight into the aegean ocean. Give us all of the Vardar (including Solun/Thessaloniki).
the name Macedonia was used in Yugoslavia way before the greeks decided to to name "New Territories" to "Northern Greece" and then to "Macedonia"
The "greeks" or should i say Hellenized Albanians who speak ALBANO-KOINE (not hellenic) only started using the name MACEDONIA, after 1988 when Macedonia was about to gain its independence from Yugoslavia. Why the problem now "greeks" how come there was no problem with the name prior to 1988? there are even greek text books that refer to the Republic of Macedonia as MACEDONIA and not as Vardar

The reality is ladies and gentlemen there are no Roman, Byzantine nor Ottoman records of an "ethnic macedonian" race.

A Macedonian Wine is just that, a wine from the region of Macedonia. Macedonia is more than just the 'returned Serbian portion', it's the entire region encompassing much of Greece, and some of Bulgaria, and even a small portion in Albania. If the Greeks want to advertise the 'Macedonian' name, then let them. There is only one Free country called 'Macedonia' today. If Greece wants to Promote Macedonia, I say let her. It's been almost 100 years now, since Greece began its denial of it's Macedonian population. It's about time.

Just like the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland now co-operate in tourism and agriculture, is it beyond the wit of the politicians in Greek and 'Macedonian' Macedonia to cooperate in joint projects to lift the standard of living of the people of a region in which the border is just another line drawn on the back of an envelope by dozy old men after two or three wars unrelated to this particular issue. Nationalism is old 19th century practice. Why try to harm each other? Do you think it impresses the rest of the world? NO it does not.
