Under the pressure from the United States and European Union Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha has stated he would cancel government-organised rally, planned for Saturday.

Berisha said his party would consider of canceling the anti-violence rally, planned to be staged on Saturday, in order to avoid its labelling as a populist movement, the ATA agency reported.

After the recent violence during the opposition protests when three people died and more than 150 heavily and lightly wounded, PM Berisha immediately announced government rally, which raised fears of renewed violence.

Leading opposition Socialist Party has also announced new rally for Friday.

The United States on Tuesday urged rival Albanian political parties to call off rallies planned this week, while the European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton stated she would send envoy Miroslav Lajcak on Wednesday to Tirana to mediate in the conflict.
