Several officials from Croatia and Bosnia Herzegovina (BH) have meet in Bosanski Brod (BH) to discuss the local oil refinery that is a major contributor to air pollution in the neighbouring Croatian city of Slavonski Brod.

The Croatian Minister of Environmental Protection, Branko Bacic met with the BH Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations Mladen Zorjevic and Srebrenka Golic, the Minister of Physical Planning, Construction and Ecology of one Bosnia’s two governing entities, Republika Srpska where Bosanski Brod is located.

Bacic gave his hosts a analysis of the air pollution in the past year, and suggested that they familiarize Croatia with their plans for impending reconstruction of the refinery.

"We discussed adopting the text about understanding and cooperation between Croatia and BH in regards to environmental protection. We expressed our support and wish that the refinery is improved, and with it the economy, but we also want the same standards of environmental protection as in Croatia."

Bosnian Ministar Zirojevic said that Croatia’s standards are stricter than Bosnia’s and that Bosnian inspectors thus have few complaints about the refinery. Croatian officials said they are ready to give Bosnia all of the regulations governing the field as Croatia is ahead of BH.

Bosnian ministers said some 50 million Euros have already been invested in the plant and that further investments totalling an additional 70 million will be made by 2015.

Minister Bacic also met with several officials and representatives of the citizen's initiative "For Clean Air" in Slavonski Brod. At the meeting they agreed that the Croatian Ministry of the Environment would provide the area with a portable benzene measure station until the current automatic measuring station is improved.
