European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said during his visit to Zagreb on Thursday that he could not discuss a possible date for the completion of Croatia's EU accession negotiations, but stressed that he had come to give Croatia a message of encouragement in the final stage of the accession process.

I cannot talk about a specific date. We have always stressed that the content is more important than the speed, Barroso told a press conference after talks with Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor.

I can give you encouragement in your final efforts, he added, stressing that the Croatian government's goal of wrapping up the membership talks by the end of June was very challenging and ambitious.

Barroso praised the work and efforts of Prime Minister Kosor and her Cabinet to bring Croatia closer to the European Union.

The meeting was also attended by EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele.
