In a resolution adopted by 506 votes to 44 with 44 abstentions, MEPs congratulate the Government on the "effective and smooth implementation" of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the EU.
The European Parliament on Thursday called on EU member states to immediately begin accession negotiations with Macedonia.
In a resolution adopted by 506 votes to 44 with 44 abstentions, MEPs congratulate the Government on the "effective and smooth implementation" of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the EU.
They nevertheless regret that the EU Council has not taken a decision on the opening of accession negotiations, despite the recommendations of the EP and the European Commission (EC).
The EP "strongly regrets the fact that the name dispute with Greece continues to block the country's road to EU accession."
MEPs underline the significance of nourishing good-neighbourly relations, including the need of finding mutually acceptable solution to the name dispute under the UN auspices. However, they note with concern the use of historical arguments in the current debate on the matter.
The resolution urge the EC and EU Council to set up an arbitrating mechanism for settling bilateral disputes between EU candidate, member countries. Settling of Skopje-Athens name row presents a test for the EU foreign policy, the document reads.
The EP is also worried about growing inter-ethnic tensions in the country, as well as the deep problems with the political culture. MEPs note the recent call for early elections, and call on all political parties to play an active and constructive role in the electoral process.
High unemployment among the young, prevalent corruption, lagging reform of the judiciary, intimidation of civil society and the deterioration in media freedom, are also mentioned as outstanding issues of concern.
The EP resolutions are not legally binding documents

Please read the original text of the European Parliament. At no point it refers to "Macedonia". It only refers to "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia". If Fyrom hadn't breached the Interim Accord all the way since the beginning, by pursuing a de-facto impose of the name, now it would most probably have started EU talks, under the name of "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia". The maximalistic idea, coupled with difficult to hide irredentism, urged FYROM to even apply as "Republic of Macedonia", breaching once again the Interim Accord.
The people of the country gained independence in 1991 from Yugoslavia, deserve a joint future and deserve to enter NATO, EU and all other institutions promoting stability and cooperation. But it can't be done upon a name that doesn't rightfully belong to anyone apart some people who lived 2.500 years ago.

Macedonia did not breached the 1995 Interim Agreement,it was Greece who veto Macedonias membership in NATO in 2008.Republic of Macedonia did apply for NATO membership under its provisional name(Fyrom).
The Greek absurd propaganda never ends.
EU is a hostage under Greeces irredentist stance on Macedonias path to EU and NATO.
EU is acting like a pimp for Greece together with France due to a lucrative arms deal made under the Katamanlis regime.
EU is playing an unfair game on this subject.
This problem can be solved quickly by Greece recognizing the indigenouse Macedonian minority in Greece.There are over 1,000,000 Macedonians living in thie area for centuries.Greece wants to wipe out the Macedonian idiom,this has been stated by numerouse Greek politisians.
The antiquisation problem is not Macedonias,it is Greeces problem for claiming the ancient Macedonians were Greek.
First of all,Greeks have no relation with the ancient Hellens,let alone with the Macedonians.
In 1925 Greece recognised the Macedonian identity,culture and language,what has changed now?
Mr.Pangalos said it right in 2008"Macedonia is Macedonia,they should be allowed to call themselves Macedonia".

@peter
Sure buddy. Its Greece that's building giant Alexander statues and endlessly insinuating Macedonia Greece is occupied territory with "united Macedonian" slogans.
Seriously are you ashamed of your ethnic Bulgarian heritage Peter? Why are you former self-identifying ethnic Bulgarians of the former Yugoslavia now pretending to be related to ancient Macedonians? Do you honest think anyone believes your historical gibberish? (which I would note the resolution did mention) Do you former self-identifying ethnic Bulgarians want to start yet another conflict for the sake of Gruevki state myths?
"The creation of the Macedonian nation, for almost half of a century, was done in a condition of single-party dictatorship. In those times, there was no difference between science and ideology, so the “Macedonian” historiography, unopposed by anybody, comfortably performed a selection of the historic material from which the “Macedonian” identity was created. There is nothing atypical here for the process of the creation of any modern nation, except when falsification from the type of substitution of the word “Bulgarian” with the word “Macedonian” were made." (Denko Maleski, former Minister of foreign affairs of FYROM from 1991 to 1993 in an interview to FYROM newspaper Utrinski Vesnik)

Other than soem language, location, biology, and a massive amount of culture i would agree with you.
Its too funny that national fanatics like you...that speak a language that used to be called BULGARIAN (before the communists modified it)... that used to call themselves ethnic Bulgarians.... who can't even read a single word of the Greek found on countless Macedonian artifacts.... have the audacity to claim Greeks have nothing in common with ancient Macedonians.
"The whole story about Ancient Macedonia sounds undoubtedly very nice. However, there is a great problem, a huge hole of about 2,000 years during which we have neither oral nor written tradition, nor a single scientific argument!” - former Prime Minister Ljubco Georgievski, FOCUS, 31 March 2008

First I must answere to the person who questions my identity.
I am not ashamed being Macedonian,the question is,are you ashamed of your Turkoalvanitiki identity?
Secondly,your question on the statues,Greece started erecting statues that are not Greek,but Macedonian.Ever since 1982 Greece re-named "Northern Greece"to Macedonia.You my friend get your story right,but than again you are Greek and have every right to fabricate history.It is no surprise there is it?
Here are the neutral views on the population of Macedonia;

An English historian Andrew Rousos;

You see the difference dont you?
Although the Macedonians are referred as "Macedonian Slavs",the main point of the statistics is the fact that they are recognised as distinct nation with cultural and historical rihgt over their country Macedonia in which they are overwhelming majority.The reluctance to refer to them for what they are simply as Macedonians,is explained by the overemphasizing of the contemporary Greek vs.Slavic(Serb and Bulgarian)rivalry over Macedonia in which the westerners desired to make the note that the Macedonians were more"Slavs"then"Greeks".thus resulting in the use of the term"Macedonian Slavs" to distinguish them from all but still indicate their closer relation to their northern then southern neighbors,as interestingly was the case with the ancient Macedonians and their closer relations with the Thracians and Illyrians then with the ancient Greeks.
Yet the term"Macedonian Slavs" is erroneous since the Macedonians,although conscious of their ancient Macedonian roots and Slav admixture,did not specifically call themselves"MacedoniansSlavs",but Macedonians as the documents over the last 2,500 years shows.The same "Macedonian Slavs"mistake was again repeated by some western media,as the Albanian terrorists attacked Macedonia in March of 2001,and again it was done deliberately.This deliberate bias is again there,unfortunately because of the political situation and the western medias inclination towards the goals of the Albanian terrorism for"Greater Albania"As at the begining of the 20th century, the Macedonians showed their outrage at the beginning of the 21st century of this racial insult and publicly instead that their nationality be respected.Npt only the Macedonians all over the world vigorously accused the western media for racial bias,but also did various western independent and non-governmental organizations.The referring to the Macedonians as"Macedonian Slavs"was a mistake was publicly acknowledged by BBC which apologized and withdrew its reporter Paul Wood precisely for his bias reporting,and since continues to rightfully refer to the Macedonians for what they have always been-Macedonians.
The information I provided on population is from;"Balkan and Neutral Statistics on the Population of Macedonia".
If there are any questions,please look-up history books,you might learn something.

Me Greek, my people no tell lies. FYROMIAN's are Slav, very bad people, they lie, very big liars. They say we veto them at Nato in Bucharest and EU, no, no, no, this big liar, it was someone else's idea, not Greeks, no, no no!
Let me tell the truth about Macedonia, me, I am true Macedonian. 2500 years ago Alexander Megali spread his Greek seed to Pontus in present day Northern Turkey, we Pontic people (approx. 1/2 million) come back to mother Macedonia in 1920, after very bad Turkish people kick us out. Of course we have to kick out some Slav's to make room for my people, but this is OK, they are only Slav's not Greek like me.
Now I tell you about Slavs, they come to my Macedonia 1600 years ago. They were happy little Slavs living in my beautiful Macedonia for 1550 years and then Tito tell them they are Macedonian and they believe this. Very stupid people, yesterday they were Slavs and today they are Macedonian. Ah ha ha ha, sorry I laugh, how stupid some people can be.
Slav's even brainwashed my dear old yaya, she sometimes forgets and calls these people Macedonian, but we soon remind her that they are scopians not Macedonians. She apologises and says old habits die hard. Poor yaya,
she even knows how to talk their slavo-vulgarian language, that malakia Tito nearly brainwashed my yaya too!
