Croatian President Ivo Josipovic is expected to travel to the United States next week where he will be meet the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the country's Vice President Joe Biden.

As Croatian daily Jutarnji List found out, the meeting has been in the works for a long time and would signify one of the most important successes of Croatian politics when it comes to the country’s relations with the United States. The daily attributes the success to Josipovic’s regional politics promoting cooperation and trust amongst the former Yugoslav states, something Americans have advocated.

The daily writes that there is a possibility that Josipovic would also meet the U.S. President Barack Obama.

The meeting comes at a sensitive time for Croatia’s internal politics after the guilty verdicts delivered in The Hague for the country's two generals, Ante Gotovina and Mladen Markac.

Washington was an advocate for the court and punishments for all war crimes. The daily speculates that the meeting could lead to a "soothing statement" coming from the American top in response to the verdicts.

The meeting is scheduled at the moment when Croatia is nearing the end of the European Union negotiations and could be perceived as a positive push for some of the decision-making circles, the daily writes.

The talks are also expected to focus on the political developments in the region.
