In its latest report on organized crime in the Balkans, Europol says the region is the central point for drug trafficking to and from the European Union.

In its latest report on organized crime in the Balkans, Europol says the region is the central point for drug trafficking to and from the European Union.

"Multinational criminal groups are active in Kosovo, Macedonia and Albania, whereas part of the funds are distributed to support armed organizations, such as the Kosovo Liberation Army", reads the report.

According to Europol, heroin from Turkey and Latin America is stored in the Balkans prior to its transport in the EU, while marijuana sold in Union member-states is produced in the region.

On the other hand, chemical narcotics produced in the EU travel to the opposite direction.

The report says cocaine containers passing through the northern and southwestern ports are unloaded in Montenegro and afterwards sent to the EU market.

Pertaining to the report, Public Security Bureau director Ljupco Todorovski said the ministry of interior has detected a number of criminal groups that are active on the black market.

"It is true that one of the heroin routes towards Europe is the Balkans. Heroin passes through the region, but larger quantities go through Russia, Ukraine and Poland. We will review the report and give our assessment", underlined Todorovski.
