The European Commission has a proposal to introduce a mechanism for suspension of the visa-free regime for Macedonia and Serbia, while the European Parliament fears that EU members may embrace it without consulting the MEPs, EP Rapporteur on Visa Liberalization for the Western Balkans Tanja Fajon told Radio Deutsche Welle - Macedonian language programme.

The new wave of false asylum seekers from Serbia and Macedonia, especially in Belgium and Sweden, is a reason for a great concern among the EU member states, who have urged EC to solve the problem, Fajon says.

"The European Commission has drafted a proposal for introducing mechanisms for suspension of the visa-free regime. The proposal is put on the table for the first time and therefore the situation is rather alarming," Fajon says.

Hence, she says, Macedonian authorities need to stop the abuse, mostly perpetrated by members of ethnic minorities who seek asylum on Europe.

"We also have information on the existence of several organized networks involved in human trafficking, ones that illegally bring people to Europe and the Schengen zone. This is rather serious, alarming information," says Fajon, who is concerned that EU members may adopt the EC proposal on suspending the free-visa regime even if it is not discussed by the European Parliament.

A decision on suspending the free-visa regime will not be good for the citizens of Macedonia and Serbia, Fajon says 'as the freedom of movement is the fundamental right and European value".

Fajon once again urges the Macedonian Government to take all necessary measures to stop the wave of asylum seekers.

"Macedonia should keep meeting the terms of the visa-liberalization agreement, as it was the case in 2009. It should inform people about the meaning of free-visa regime, prevent crime and guarantee the safety of borders. I believe the authorities know very well what is important and should just fulfill these conditions," Fajon says.
