Deutsche Welle has reported an assessment of the European Stability Initiative (ESI) about possible reintroduction of the visa regime for Macedonia and Serbia unless these countries succeed in reducing the influx of asylum seekers.

Conclusions of the European Commission's mission assessing the implementation of the visa liberalisation in Macedonia and other countries in the region will be known in June, EU Ambassador Peter Sorensen said Wednesday with regard to announcements of possible cancellation of the visa-free regime due to an increasing influx of asylum seekers in EU countries.

"I cannot comment right now. A monitoring mission is assessing the situation here and in the entire region. We don't want to bring up any conclusions without seeing what they have to say. As far as I know, the EC will complete the report in June, when this issue will be discussed once again," Sorensen told reporters.

Deutsche Welle has reported an assessment of the European Stability Initiative (ESI) about possible reintroduction of the visa regime for Macedonia and Serbia unless these countries succeed in reducing the influx of asylum seekers.

EU countries are worried because of the mounting number of asylum seekers and want to establish a mechanism which will allow the visa regime to be likely temporarily introduced once again when the visa-free travel is to be abused. France and the Netherlands sought this measure to be taken even in 2010. EU members are currently waiting to see how the situation will develop. However, as the number of asylum requests is not decreasing, the issue poses a great challenge for the countries.

"The visa liberalisation is not threatened at the moment, but it could be put into question in a couple of months. The number of suspicious asylum seekers from Macedonia and Serbia is not dropping, even though a year has passed since it started to cause worries," ESI's Alexandra Stiglmayer says.

The European Commission should put forward a final proposal on how this curbing mechanism could function in June, according to her.
