European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton has said the EU backs the Dayton Accords and that it is ready to impose sanctions and restrictive measures upon those who violate it.

European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton has said the EU backs the Dayton Accords and that it is ready to impose sanctions and restrictive measures upon those who violate it.

The new Council of Ministers in Bosnia-Herzegovina has to be provided a broad political basis and support of a strong majority which would agree on the implementation of crucial reforms, Ashton told the Sarajevo-based daily Dnevni Avaz.

She confirmed that BiH is one of her priorities and that she is closely following the setting up of authority in that country, adding that the halt in that process has to be overcome as soon as possible with the establishment of a broad coalition at the state level.

Ashton said that the EU would be even more active in BiH, and announced the soon arrival of newly-appointed EU special envoy and Head of the EU Delegation in BiH Peter Sorensen to Sarajevo.

She said Sorensen is well acquainted with the situation in BiH and the entire West Balkans, and that he will hugely support BiH in making progress towards the European Union.

Sorensen will have at his disposal a broad and well-balanced range of EU programmes and policy. He is expected to play a very important role in respect of the EU, as well as in monitoring and assisting the reforms BiH is carrying out in its pathway of EU stabilisation and association.

That process ensures a framework for the relations between the EU and BiH. Sorensen will be working together with the BiH authorities, and I hope that in return, they will assume part of the responsibility, Ashton said.
