Greek conservative opposition leader Antonis Samaras on Saturday repeated his demand that Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou resign and the country move to snap elections.

Greek conservative opposition leader Antonis Samaras on Saturday repeated his demand that Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou resign and the country move to snap elections.

Samaras, head of the New Democracy (ND) party, said he still backed the idea of a short-term coalition government with the aim of securing parliamentary approval of a eurozone bailout for Greece before elections are held.

Samaras will meet the country's president on Sunday, a statement from the president's office said.

Coalition of the Left (SYRIZA) Parliamentary group leader Alexis Tsipras, speaking to his party's central committee on Saturday, referred to an "operetta" and a party (ruling PASOK) where its MPs care only for holding on to power.

He spoke hours after a vote of confidence concluded in Parliament after midnight on Saturday morning.

Tsipras also attacked main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Antonis Samaras, stressing that the "ND president, who cried for the 'haircut' agreement and decisions at the EU summit for our country, now has decided he will accept them given, as long as they are ratified by a disposable government and that (PM George) Mr. Papandreou resigns, thus opening the way for him (Samaras) to become prime minister."

Tsipras again called for snap elections immediately.

Popular Orthodox Rally (LA.O.S) leader George Karatzaferis on Saturday, in statements to the Athens News Agency, called on main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Antonis Samaras to reconsider his stance before the latest and dramatic political developments in the country.

"I am making a public plea to Antonis Samaras to reconsider his stance. We succeeded in taking the first step with the departure of Prime Minister George Papandreou from his seat. We must take the second step, together," he said.

Karatzaferismet with close associates to discuss the latest fluid political development in the country and to define his party's positions.

According to party sources, Karatzaferis said he considers the issue of who will be proposed to succeed Prime Minister George Papandreou as paramount.

Moreover, he noted that a government of "national salvation" without main opposition New Democracy's participation is 'crippled'.

Along those lines, he said that ND leader Antonis Samaras could be persuaded to support such a coalition government if the person proposed enjoys broad political recognition.

Finally, Karatzaferis underlined that the entire process must be shephered by the President of the Republic and not George Papandreou, because "if Papandreou manages developments then the whole effort is doomed from the beginning."
