The 60th anniversary of the Athens News was celebrated at a small ceremony in the paper’s newsroom on Friday.

The 60th anniversary of the Athens News was celebrated at a small ceremony in the paper’s newsroom on Friday.

The birthday cake was cut by Stephanie Horn , widow of founder Yannis Horn, who said that the newspaper survived so long in no small part to her husband’s determination and stubbornness.

Afterwards, staff presented Mrs Horn with a folder containing a copy of the newspaper’s first issue, which appeared on 29 January 1952.

Clearly moved, she said that it was the first time that she had seen the first issue.

Also in attendance was George Kyriakides, son of Petros Kyriakides, who has owned and published the Athens News since 2008.

Dinos Mitsis, news editor from 1991 to 2009, also stopped by to extend his greetings to the staff.
