The results and impressions from the meeting in Brdo near Kranj in Slovenia, which the Western Balkan state leaders attended and which Serbia and many EU officials did not take part in after all, are making the headlines in Sunday’s press in Serbia, FOCUS News Agency reports from Belgrade.
The newspapers unanimously describe the meeting as a failure.
Politika daily publishes a commentary on its first page Modest Range of Kranj Meeting. It notes only officials of Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, FYRMacedonia, Albania and Kosovo accepted the invitation of Slovenia and Croatia.
Organizers’ Diplomatic Fiasco, reads the title of the article in Blic daily. According to the media, the newspaper says, the meeting is unsuccessful mostly because of the absence of Serbian President Boris Tadic and senior EU officials.
The initial objective of the meeting of all Western Balkan leaders in Slovenia was to prove regional unity that despite the 1990s conflicts and current domestic and bilateral issues, all countries are now determined to move together towards EU membership, the newspaper notes.
Blic pays attention also to the Serbian politicians’ comments on the conference. It cites an announcement of the Liberal Democratic Party and Democratic Party of Serbia leader Vojislav Kostunica.
The Liberal Democratic Party comments on Tadic’s decision not to attend the meeting, describing it as very dangerous, because in this way Serbia voluntarily gives up the opportunity to make decisions for itself and prove it is ready to solve its problem in a European way.
The meeting in Slovenia, says Vojislav Kostunica, confirms Belgrade’s policy ‘EU has no alternative’ is devastating and Serbia has to return back to the track that envisages EU membership in its entirety.
A Real failure in Kranj is the title in Vecernje Novosti daily.
The newspaper comments that the forum will be remembered with many things, but not with achieved goals. The participants in the conference could be counted on the fingers of one hand, the daily says and adds that important EU guests and the president of the biggest country in the region Serbia were absent.
