Fatmir Sejdiu, president of the Democratic League of Kosovo and now former president of Kosovo, on Sept. 28 presided over a session of the party's presidency, the Democratic League of Kosovo confirmed.
The aftermath of Sejdiu's resignation as Kosovo president was not discussed during the meeting, party vice president Eqrem Kryeziu told media in Pristina, but party leaders did emphasize their desire to avoid hindering progress in Kosovo.
Kryeziu said the Democratic League of Kosovo is ready for any circumstances, adding that democratic processes in Kosovo will not be taken hostage by his party.
This was the first time Sejdiu chaired a session of his party since being elected party president in 2006.
European Parliament official Eduard Kukan said he hopes Sejdiu's resignation will contribute to an atmosphere of healthy democratic development in Kosovo.
Kukan, who heads the European Parliament's delegation for relations with South Eastern Europe, said Sejdiu's decision to abide by the decision of the Kosovo Constitutional Court on the incompatibility of the two political offices demonstrates respect for the rule of law and the principles of democracy.
Officials in the European Commission told BETA that Sejdiu's resignation is an internal matter, but stressed that developments in Kosovo are being watched closely, among other reasons as part of preparations for the dialog between Belgrade and Pristina.
At the same time, acting Kosovo president Jakup Krasniqi met with representatives of opposition parties in the Assembly on Sept. 28.
The topic of the meeting with Blerim Shala of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo, Ibrahim Gashi of the New Kosovo Alliance and Nexhat Daci of the Democratic League of Dardania was the situation in Kosovo in the wake of the president's resignation, BETA learned.
