State Secretary for Air Transport at the Ministry of Infrastructure Miodrag Miljkovic said today that direct flights between Serbia and the largest cities in the United States are most likely be established as of May 2012.

State Secretary for Air Transport at the Ministry of Infrastructure Miodrag Miljkovic said today that direct flights between Serbia and the largest cities in the United States are most likely be established as of May 2012.

Miljkovic said in a statement to the Tanjug news agency that a direct air line between our country and the United States will be possible due to the enforcement of the new Law on air traffic that the Serbian parliament adopted last week.

He said on the occasion of 16 October, the Day of air traffic in Serbia and 100 years of Serbian aviation, that our country will get the first category in the air.

This means direct flights from Belgrade to New York and other major US cities, he said.

The State Secretary that there are five local airports that can be converted into international – Batajnica, Ladjevci, Ponikve, Bor and Vrsac.

He stated that RSD 2.3 billion will be invested in the Ladjevci airport, while the other four airports will be activated if there is interest for that.

Miljkovic recalled that on this date in 1910, the pioneer of Serbian aviation Ivan Saric had his first flight in Subotica, which is why 16 October marks the beginning of aviation in Serbia.

For the past 100 years about 9,000 Serbian aircraft flew on the Serbian sky, of which the largest part were military aircraft – about 7,700, and the rest were passenger aircraft and general aviation, said Miljkovic.

He said the centenary of Serbian aviation will be officially marked next week.
