About 1,400 residents of Ljubovija, Loznica and Prijepolje have been evacuated from their homes, while the water level of the Drina River and the Lim River has slightly abated.

About 1,400 residents of Ljubovija, Loznica and Prijepolje have been evacuated from their homes, while the water level of the Drina River and the Lim River has slightly abated.

Western Serbian municipalities of Prijepolje and Loznica declared a state of emergency.

Serbian President Boris Tadic visited Ljubovija on Thursday to have an insight into the consequences of the floods in the Drina River basin.

The water level of the Drina River increased for over five meters in just a couple of hours on Wednesday flooding a large number of households in Azbukovica, Western Serbia.

Head of the Serbian Interior Ministry (MUP) Emergency Situation Sector Predrag Maric told Tanjug that during the night, the water level of the Drina River in Loznica and Ljubovija and of the Lim River in Prijepolje stagnated, but added that the situation is difficult and that about 1,200 Loznica residents and 58 people in Prijepolje and Bordarevo were evacuated from their homes.

More than 700 residents and 80 members of the Emergency Situation Sector worked through the night to reinforce the banks in Loznica, specified Maric.

He said that a huge area of arable land is flooded and that no more people were evacuated from Ljubovija last night.

About 200 members of the Emergency Situation Sector were sent to Loznica, Ljubovija and Prijepolje and will remain there until the water level starts to drop, said Maric.
