France unreservedly supports Serbia's endeavors for getting the status of candidate for European Union membership, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for EU Integration Bozidar Djelic said Tuesday after meeting French Minister for European Affairs Laurent Wauquiez in Paris.

France unreservedly supports Serbia's endeavors for getting the status of candidate for European Union membership, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for EU Integration Bozidar Djelic said Tuesday after meeting French Minister for European Affairs Laurent Wauquiez in Paris.

Wauquiez also expressed support to the start of negotiatins for EU integration provided that all the necessary conditions are met, Djelic told Tanjug.

Wauquiez said that the time when some EU decisions were taken without taking specific achievements in reforms has passed, Djelic said.

The Serbian delegation pointed to the need for a better distribution of EU financial assistance to countries in the integration process, Djelic said.

A country should not wait for EU integration before getting greater financial assistance, this should be done gradually along the way, he said.

Djelic said that he conferred with officials of the French Foreign Trade Ministry on the conditions for strategic partnership in building the Belgrade subway.

France has earmarked a donation of EUR three million for a feasibility study, he noted.

Serbia expects France to secure the best possible conditions for becoming its strategic partner in this essential infrastructure project, Djelic said.

He emphasized that the aim of his visit is the preparation for Serbian President Boris Tadic's visit to France next spring.
