The problem of asylum seekers in Germany will not delay Serbia's talks with the EU, the Commission for Southeast Europe vice president and European Parliament rapporteur for Serbia, Jelko Kacin, told BETA on Jan. 5.
"The accession dynamics is determined by Serbia alone," Kacin said. He added that at the moment Serbia is in the phase of monitoring, after which the European Commission will or will not propose a date for the launch of the talks.
On Jan. 4, the Ljubljanabased daily Dnevnik published a report from Berlin, saying that Germany is angry over "more than 1,000 asylum seekers from Serbia and Macedonia." The report also noted that "the recent abolishing of visas for the citizens of Bosnia Herzegovina and Albania could further increase the figure."
"Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic is investing huge effort to inform Serbia's citizens about all the difficulties concerning asylum seeking," Kacin told BETA. He added that this "should not be a reason for putting off the date for launching the talks on Serbia's accession to the EU."
Commenting on Berlin's anger, Kacin said those asylum seekers "mainly come from the Western Balkans, Romania and Bulgaria, which has provoked aversion in Germany, France and some Scandinavian states."
