Turkish surgeon Yusuf Sonmez denied his involvement in human organ trafficking in Kosovo and Albania, adding that he will not appear before the EULEX court which indicted him of being the 'main surgeon' in the Pristina-based private clinic Medicus.

Turkish surgeon Yusuf Sonmez denied his involvement in human organ trafficking in Kosovo and Albania, adding that he will not appear before the EULEX court which indicted him of being the 'main surgeon' in the Pristina-based private clinic Medicus.

I have no intention of appearing before the EULEX court. I do not believe in Kosovo institutions, nor in the possibility that a territory which is so heavily involved in crime can ensure a fair trial, not even under the auspices of Europe and the UN, Sonmez told the Belgrade-based Verenje Novosti on Friday, explaining why he avoids facing justice if he claims that he is innocent.

Pristina launched an invetigation against Sonmez and another nine persons, claiming that they developed trafficking in organs that they removed from poor people and sold to rich pations from the western countries.

The Turkish doctor admits that he worked at the Medicus clinic for a certain period, denying his involvement in illegal activities or the case of the 'yellow house' in Albania, where Serb captives were killed and their organs removed and illegally sold at the end of the 1990s.

Yusuf Sonmez, whom the Turkish media refer to as Doctor Frankenstein, lives with his wife and daughter in a luxurious villa in an elite part of Istanbul. Even though he was temporarily held in custody, he will not be extradited to EULEX, as the Turkish laws do not allow for that.

Sonmez, who had earlier been suspected of organ trafficking in his own country, stated for Vecernje Novosti that his culpability was not proved and that the Istanbul media framed him on that.

Gudeljevic: Kosovo prosecutor wants to interrogate Sonmez

The Kosovo special prosecutor wants to interrogate Yusuf Sonmez, a Turkish doctor suspected of involvement in illicit human organ trafficking in Kosovo, even though he has been interrogated and released by the Turkish authorities.

The prosecutor wants information about the organ trafficking case related to the Medicus hospital in Pristina, EULEX Spokesperson Irina Gudeljevic told Tanjug.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor will continue to work closely with the Turkish authorities, she noted. Sonmez remains a suspect in the medicus case, Gudeljevic confirmed.

The Turkish doctor is one of nine people who are being investigated for organ trafficking in connection with the Medicus private hospital.
