EULEX has begun preparing for an investigation against Kosovo's Prime Minister Hasim Taci regarding claims of his involvement in human organ trafficking, while Human Rights Watch has stated that a special prosecutor with experience in complex cases should be in charge of the investigation.
The EU Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX) has begun preparing for an investigation against Kosovo's Prime Minister Hasim Taci regarding claims of his involvement in human organ trafficking, while Human Rights Watch has stated that a special prosecutor with experience in complex cases should be in charge of the investigation, EUobserver.com reported Wednesday.
EULEX Chief Prosecutor Isabelle Arnal and Kosovo Deputy Prosecutor Sevdije Morina met recently with their Albanian colleagues in Tirana to get assurance the authorities would cooperate in the investigation.
It was only the first meeting and it is too early to say if Tirana is going to cooperate, a EULEX spokeswoman said Wednesday.
According to her, three weeks ago EULEX sent a written request to Council of Europe rapporteur Dick Marty asking for hard evidence of his claims that Taci ran a crime ring called the Drenica Group, which was involved in organ, drug and weapons trafficking during and after the war in Kosovo.
Marty gave two conciliatory interviews for Albanian-language media on Tuesday, EUobserver states.
"I know that seeking the truth can be painful, but it was never my intention to criticise or criminalise a community," he told the Swiss based albinfo.ch, adding that "as far as (Kosovo's) independence is concerned, I never opposed independence as such. I opposed and criticised it from a legal perspective ... the way independence was declared was not completely correct."
Speaking to Radio Television of Kosovo, Marty said that "People very close to Taci were implicated, so it is very difficult to imagine that he has never heard about it ... By no means I can imagine Taci participating personally in taking out the organs."
