If the Serbian government fails to fulfil the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) requests, including the most important one which refers to calling early elections, within two months, the SNS will launch protests until their requests have been met, SNS leader Tomislav Nikolic stated on Tuesday.

If the Serbian government fails to fulfil the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) requests, including the most important one which refers to calling early elections, within two months, the SNS will launch protests until their requests have been met, SNS leader Tomislav Nikolic stated on Tuesday.

“They (the government) have two months to adopt a sensible and prudent decision. If they fail to do so, we will make the decision by organising a peaceful protest which will bring entire Belgrade to a grinding halt,” Nikolic told Tanjug.

He noted that the SNS will communicate their requests, including the one which refers to calling early elections, to the government at the meeting in front of the Serbian parliament building on February 5.

The SNS leader pointed out that the situation in the country is unbearable, just like the state among partners in the ruling coalition, and this can be solved only by calling early elections.

Nikolic stated on that, in order to avoid any potential incidents, the party and the police have agreed on almost all details with regard to the security aspect of the gathering in the Belgrade downtown.

He expressed expectation that at least 70.000 people will show up at the gathering.

“Yesterday we had talks with the police. We have agreed on all details and the protection of safety of both entire Belgrade and every citizen, and we aim to prevent anyone who might show up from turning the gathering into something we do not have in mind,” Nikolic said following the meeting with Head of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Mission to Serbia Dimitrios Kypreos.

The SNS leader specified that, in addition to the police, 1.000 SNS members with distinct emblems will also be protecting the gathering.

Nikolic called on all citizens who want to see some changes made in the country to attend the gathering where, as he said, the SNS and its partners will state their requests which they will not renounce.

Nikolic: SNS sees Serbia as EU member

During the talks with Head of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Mission to Serbia Dimitrios Kypreos, Nikolic said that the SNS already sees Serbia as a member of the European Union (EU), a modern democratic country governed in keeping with European standards.

Following his meeting with the OSCE chief, Nikolic said that the SNS has proven that its path is a purely democratic one and that the party's vision is for Serbia to be a normal, modern country which would keep all it has and not try to take over what does not belong to her, which would root out corruption and be governed in keeping with EU standards.

According to Nikolic, he and Kypreos discussed all issues that plague Serbia in the resolving of which the international community and OSCE could help.

“We discussed the social and economic situation in Serbia, the country's EU path, especially the state in the Raska District (south-western Serbia) with regard to constitution of national councils of ethnic minorities, as well as the issue of Kosovo-Metohija. I voiced SNS stands on all these issues and we reached an understanding on a number of problems and the way we think they can be solved,” Nikolic said.

The SNS leader said that the SNS protest scheduled for February 5 was also discussed at the meeting, as well as the actions the party and the authorities are taking to ensure that the protest passes as a democratic gathering of citizens who have come to express their dissatisfaction and animosity over the situation in Serbia.
