A group of scientists gathered in the Say No movement submitted a petition to Serbian President Boris Tadic Monday, requesting the reestablishment of an independent science ministry, which was adjoined to the Education Ministry by the government reshuffle.

The petition, launched on March 10, was signed by 5,500 people, among whom 4,000 scientists, 1,000 PhDs, 300 university professors and about 30 academics, representative of the Say No team Nemanja Djordjevic stressed in front of the Serbian presidential building.

He added that a copy of the petition will also be submitted to Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic and parliament speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic during the day.

"This action, without any political background, has gathered thousands of people who want to draw the public's attention to the damage inflicted to the scientific community by the abolishment of the science ministry, and consequently to the economy and the entire society," Djordjevic said.

"It was a mistake to abolish the science ministry, and we hope that, if not sooner, this mistake will be corrected after the new elections," he underscored.
