President of the Political Council of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Vesna Pesic resigned her office Wednesday, because party leader Cedomir Jovanovic did not immediately publicly apologize to African countries for his statement in the Serbian Parliament.
On March 21, Jovanovic was asking questions in the parliament to Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic regarding the situation in Libya, and in doing so described the African and Arab peoples as cannibals.
A group of African and Arab countries responded with a protest letter, delivered to Jeremic and Serbian Parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic.
Minister Jeremic apologized for Jovanovic's statement noting that Serbia has been put in a very uncomfortable position. and stressed that this is not the official state policy.
Pesic told Tanjug that she will remain in the party and will continue to be an LDP MP in the Serbian parliament.
She explained that she had resigned the day after Jovanovic's statement as she disagreed with it.
Jovanovic made a blunder and should have immediately apologized to the public. Then there would have been no reaction from African countries or the need for a response of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pesic said.
