Tomislav Nikolic on hunger strike to force vote
Tomislav Nikolic told at least 50,000 protesters on Saturday he would go on hunger strike until the government agreed to early elections in the Balkan country.

“As of this morning I am not taking food and water. My message to Tadic is, when something bad happens to me, call elections,” Tomislav Nikolic, head of the conservative Serbian Progressive Party, told the crowd in central Belgrade.

Nikolic and his party have stepped up calls for early elections in recent weeks. Voting is currently due to take place in early 2012.

Protesters carried party flags and banners with the slogans “Down with thieves” and “People want justice, work and progress”. Some chanted”Save Serbia and kill yourself Boris,” referring to the president.

Nikolic said his party, which leads an alliance of several smaller parties, is demanding early elections, higher wages, a crackdown on corruption and pro-European reforms.
