The preservation of Kosovo and the EU accession remain the strategic goals of the Serbian government, but new preconditions and demands could weaken people's euro enthusiasm, Serbian State Secretary with the Ministry for Kosovo-Metohija Oliver Ivanovic has stated.

The preservation of Kosovo and the EU accession remain the strategic goals of the Serbian government, but new preconditions and demands could weaken people's euro enthusiasm, Serbian State Secretary with the Ministry for Kosovo-Metohija Oliver Ivanovic has stated.

I believe that there will be problems on the EU pathway, but I also believe that is politically incorrect that now when the country has fulfilled the crucial precondition (the extradition of the ICTY fugitives) for the beginning of the talks and getting the EU candidate status, new conditions are being mentioned, Ivanovic stated on Thursday evening.

Ivanovic underlined that the statement by Serbian President Boris Tadic that Serbia cannot accept to abolish its institutions in the north of the province is a clear message that taking care of the Serbian people is what matters most.

“We cannot blame ourselves for anything. We have done everything that we considered to be our task on the European path,” Ivanovic underlined in statement for Belgrade TV B92 regarding the latest demands presented by German Chancellor Angela Merkel during her visit to Belgrade on Tuesday.

In the talks with President Tadic, Merkel asked for EULEX to be allowed to operate in entire Kosovo, as well as for the abolishment of parallel institutions in north Kosovo.

Ivanovic recalled that Germany, Austria and Belgium are traditional destination countries for the immigrants from southeastern Europe, and warned that in case of instability in Kosovo, these countries can face a new wave of immigrants whić they probably would not like.
