Commander of the Serbian Air Force and Air Defense Gen Ranko Zivak said in Angola that Serbia wants to help the country restore the air base in the southern province of Huila.
Zivak, who is visiting Angola as part of a Serbian delegation headed by Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac, told a news conference in the city of Lubango that the Serbian delegation is made up of experts and he is certain Serbia can help Angola, the Angola Press agency reported.
The Huila air base is the second largest in the country, following the one in the capital Luanda, and the former Yugoslavia was involved in its construction 30 years ago. On the second day of his visit to Angola, Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac met with President Jose Eduardo dos Santos.
Sutanovac said cooperation between Serbia and Angola dates to the time of Angola's first president Agostinho Neto and president of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia Josip Broz Tito.
Sutanovac also commended the progress Angola has made in different areas.
"I believe there is room for Serbia to get involved in the development of your country," he said.
Sutanovac visited an army base in the company of his Angolan counterpart Candido Van-Dunem, where he also met with Deputy Commander of the Angolan Armed Forces Gouveia de Sa Miranda.
At the start of his visit, Sutanovac stated that training of soldiers and construction of military infrastructure are the main priorities of the bilateral cooperation, and the goal of his visit is strengthening the two countries' friendly relations.
The Serbian delegation was received by Angola's parliament Speaker Antonio Paulo Kassoma.
Sutanovac presented greetings to Kassoma from his Serbian counterpart Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic. He recalled that many Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) officers were trained at academies in the former Yugoslavia and there is a wish to renew the program.
On Tuesday, Sutanovac laid a wreath at the monument to Agostinho Neto in Luanda.
