State Secretary for the Digital Agenda at the Ministry of Culture, Media and Information Society Jasna Matic said that the Cyrillic internet domain .srb, which has officially been launched today, is a major step forward in internet development in Serbia and its integration in citizens’ everyday life.
Matic told a press conference that during the first hour, 235 websites with the Cyrillic domain have been registered, noting that the significance of this will be evident through easier integration of internet addresses into Cyrillic texts, official documents and forms.
She recalled that two years ago, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) made a decision to enable registration of domains in alphabets other than Latin.
The .srb domain was selected after a public debate and it was required that the domain name includes at least one letter specific for the Cyrillic script, Matic explained.
This is the second national domain in Cyrillic script, after the Russian .rf.
Institutions of national importance which already have their .srb domain are the President of the Republic, the Serbian government, the City of Belgrade, the Digital Agenda Administration, the Radio Television Serbia and the RNIDS.
