The Serbian government has declared this evening an emergency situation in the territory of entire Serbia because by regular means it is not possible to solve multiple problems caused by heavy snowfall and cold weather – from cleaning roads to supplying food, medicines and electricity.

The government made this decision at a telephone session, at the proposal of the State team for emergency situations.

Proposal for declaring emergency situation in whole of Serbia

First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dacic said today that the State team for emergency situations will propose to the Serbian government to declare an emergency situation in Serbia because of the problems caused by heavy snowfall.

Dacic told a press conference at the Palace of Serbia, held after the meeting of the team for emergency situations, that he hopes that the government will make this decision at a telephone conference during the day.

Due to heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures, the emergency situation has been declared in 32 municipalities in Serbia so far.

According to the forecasts of the Hydrometeorological institute of Serbia, "freezing days" in Serbia will last until 12 February.

Emergency situation declared in 32 municipalities

Assistant Minister of the Interior and Head of the Department for Emergency Situations Predrag Maric said today that nine persons have died from cold and bad weather, that 32 municipalities in Serbia have declared emergency situation, while 69,700 people are currently cut off from the world.

Maric told Tanjug news agency that it will be known during the day whether emergency situation will be declared in entire Serbia, in some of its parts, or whether this measure will not be undertaken at all.

It will primarily depend on reports from the field. The fact is that snow is not so strong today which will give a chance to state authorities to do something, he said, adding that more than 5,000 local and unclassified roads are not cleaned.

The Assistant Minister reiterated that nine people died in Serbia from cold and bad weather.

There were two mentally ill patients who have left home and got frozen, three homeless people and several old people who tried to go somewhere, thinking that they would succeed, he said.

The police are still searching for one more person who has been missing for six days already.

The new municipalities that declared emergency situation in last 24 hours are Kraljevo, Becej, Koceljeva, Cicevac and Varvarin, Maric noted.

He said that more than 550 heavy machines and bulldozers are engaged in clearing the snow, as well as 1,500 firefighters and rescue workers, approximately 1,200 people from various utility services and about 300 medical workers.
