Opening the Serbian-Italian conference “Transplantation in Serbia, challenges and possibilities”, Stankovic stressed that he expects Italy’s help in this respect bearing in mind that over the past years Italy has assisted Serbia and invested in its Ministry of Health and the health system.

Minister of Health Zoran Stankovic said today that in the period ahead a system should be developed to enable the transplantations of heart, lungs and other organs to be performed in Serbia.

Opening the Serbian-Italian conference “Transplantation in Serbia, challenges and possibilities”, Stankovic stressed that he expects Italy’s help in this respect bearing in mind that over the past years Italy has assisted Serbia and invested in its Ministry of Health and the health system.

The Minister said that protocols on cooperation and exchange of experts should be signed to enable some transplantation surgeries, such as heart transplantation, to be performed in Serbia.

Serbia needs transplantation centres, he stressed, noting that it is important that Serbian experts visit countries where these surgeries are successfully performed in order to perfect their skills.

A large number of experts have been trained and funds have been secured to begin transplantations of all organs in Serbia, he observed.

Italian Ambassador to Serbia Armando Varicchio recalled that the cooperation between Italy and Serbia in transplantation surgery has already begun and that Serbian patients are treated in Italian hospitals.

Varicchio underlined that the goal is to step up this cooperation, but also that Serbia should develop its own capacity so that Serbian experts can perform these surgeries in their country.

He also recalled that in the previous period, the Italian government has set aside €4.5 billion for the health sector in Serbia, affirming that it is contemplating the allocation of another €1 billion to the mental health sector.

These are just efforts to help Serbia which is on an even footing with other European states not only at a bilateral, but also at any other level, Varicchio said.
