Until recently a high official of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Vesna Pesic, has stated that she is leaving politics and that she will not be on any election list at the next parliamentary elections.

"I have decided to leave politics. I will not be on any of the lists at the next parliamentary elections. What's enough is enough," Pesic told the Belgrade daily Vecernje novosti.

Pointing out that she is putting an end to her political career, which lasts for more than two decades, she said that, until the end of her mandate, she will remain in the parliament as an independent MP, but did not want to reveal her plans for the future.

The daily reported that Pesic, who is one of the doyens of the fight for democratic Serbia, resigned the position of LDP Political Advisor in early April 2011, and soon after that left the party, after a confrontation with party leader Cedomir Jovanovic regarding his statement that African peoples are cannibals.

After that, she retained her mandate as an independent MP.

Pesic fought against (Slobodan) Milosevic's regime as President of Civic Alliance of Serbia, from 1992 to 1998, and as one of the leaders of Zajedno (Together) coalition, from 1993 to 1997. After the victory, on October 5, she was appointed as Ambassador to Mexico, where she held the office from 2001 to 2005.
