Although the EU leaders at the summit in Brussels have not yet made an official decision, a formulation to award EU candidacy to Serbia has been added to draft conclusions, which will be published on March 2.

The European Council is meeting in Brussels and on the table is a draft of the conclusions stating that the heads of member states concur to grant Serbia candidate status for membership in the EU, Tanjug has learned from diplomatic sources.

A European diplomat who wished to remain anonymous and who had access to draft conclusions told Tanjug that the Council will approve the candidacy of Serbia.

The European Council supports the Ministerial Council conclusions of 28 February 2012 regarding enlargement and the process of association and stabilization, and agrees to grant candidate status to Serbia, the draft conclusions of the European Council state, the diplomat said.

The session is still in progress and the confirmation that Serbia is a candidate for EU membership is expected to be officially announced during the evening.
