The U.S. Department of Justice at the U.S. Embassy Belgrade, in conjunction with the Judicial Training Center and the OSCE Mission to Serbia, has begun providing a series of trainings on the new Law on Forfeiture of Assets Deriving from Criminal Activity.

The training program targets prosecutors, judges and police and will be implemented throughout Serbia in the form of a two-day seminar.

On June 5 and 6 the second training in a series will be held at Sava Center in Belgrade. The aim of the training is to enhance the capacity of police, prosecutors and judges to effectively identify, seize and forfeit assets generated through criminal activity.

The speakers will include prominent Serbian law professors, judges, prosecutors and police officials – some of whom participated in drafting of the law. The participants will have the opportunity to discuss the new system of asset forfeiture in Serbia and practical problems related to identifying and seizing assets, and learn more about international standards related to asset forfeiture.

Opening remarks will be delivered by senior judicial and prosecutorial officials, including the President of the Supreme Court and the representatives of the Republic Prosecutor’s Office and the Ministry of Justice.

The Law on Forfeiture of Assets Deriving from Criminal Activity, adopted in October 2008, was implemented as of March 1, 2009. The Law is expected to be a significant tool in combating serious crime, including, organized crime and corruption.
