The hitherto unknown anarchist organization Crni Ilija late on Aug. 25 claimed responsibility for the attack on the embassy, seeking the release of Thodoros Iliopoulos, arrested during riots in Greece late last year.
The Interior Ministry has announced that several unidentified individuals threw two Molotov cocktails at the Greek embassy in Belgrade in the night between Aug. 24 and 25, and then fled the crime scene.
The ministry says no one was injured, adding that one window on the building was fractured and a small fire broke out. Police are working intensively on shedding light on this case, the ministry added.
Serbian state TV quoted witnesses as saying that five young men had thrown the Molotov cocktails at the building. After that they split up, with one group walking away from the scene and the other leaving by cab, the TV says.
The embassy press department's adviser Petros Tsarouchis told BETA on Aug. 25 that all embassy services are operating normally.
"The damage caused to the embassy building is really minimal," Tsarouchis said. "Police investigated the scene and we are now waiting for a report," he added.

Serbian Foreign Ministry officials told BETA on Aug. 25 that the ministry strongly condemns the savage attack on the Greek embassy, and is in constant contact with Greek embassy representatives.
Serbian President Boris Tadic denounced the Molotov cocktail attack on the Greek embassy in Belgrade, BETA learned at the president's cabinet.
On Aug. 25, Tadic met with Greek Ambassador to Serbia Dimosthenis Stoidis and said such an attack was intolerable. He added that the state would take every step to find and punish the perpetrators.
