Groups of ethnic Albanians and Serbs clashed in Brdjani, an ethnically mixed neighborhood of Kosovska Mitrovica, soon after the start of rebuilding razed ethnic Albanian houses.
More than 100 Serbs rallied in protest because the homes were being reconstructed without their consent. The Serbs also claimed that more ethnic Albanian houses were being reconstructed, which breaks an agreement reached earlier to renew five Serb and five ethnic Albanian houses.
The ethnic Albanians and Serbs cast stones on each other, while EULEX members securing the site with the Kosovo police fired several tear gas canisters and shock bombs toward the assembled Serbs.
Around 10 a.m., the blast of an explosive device and gunfire were heard in Brdjani.
Five ethnic Albanians and two Serbs were injured by stones in the incident, the Kosovo police announced.
After several hours of convincing by the Kosovo police that the security was unsatisfactory, ethnic Albanian returnees abandoned the works during the afternoon. The police announced that no agreement had been reached on a possible resumption of reconstruction.
Clashes between Serbs and ethnic Albanians over house building and site clearing began in October 2008.
Radenko Nedeljkovic, head of the Kosovska Mitrovica Administrative County, accused the ethnic Albanian side and international community of responsibility for the incident
