The American Embassy in Belgrade expressed concern that so far no one was sentenced for the murders of American citizens Agron, Ilija and Mehmet Bitici in 1999, adding that it expects that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

We are familiar with the fact that the War Crimes Prosecutor intends to lodge an appeal to the acquittal ordered on September 22. We hope that the Prosecution will thoroughly examine all elements of the case, the American Embassy stated. We expect that the Serbian authorities will bring to justice the murderers of Agron, Ilija and Mehmet Bitici, the statement reads.

Bitici brothers, American citizens of Albanian origin, were members of the Kosovo Liberation Army's Atlantic Brigade. Sreten Popovic and Milos Stojanovic, former police officers, were acquitted Tuesday from charges that they deprived three brothers Bitici of their right to legal trial and thus helped unknown members of the Serbian Interior Ministry (MUP) to kill them. The Serbian War Crime Prosecution expressed dissatisfaction with the acquittal in Bitici brothers' case and announced that it will lodge an appeal to the Supreme Court of Serbia.
