National Bank of Serbia (NBS) Governor Dejan Soskic stated that the weakening of the dinar against the euro is the consequence of insufficient foreign currency inflow to Serbia, caused by the country's inadequate economic structure.
"At this point, Serbia's economic structure, as a consequence of ten-year transition changes, is not able to generate a sufficient foreign currency inflow through export," Soskic stated for the television B92.
Serbia has a constant trade imbalance with foreign countries, and a balance-of-payments deficit above nine percent of the GDP, which is the main reason for the pressure on the national currency in the foreign exchange market, Soskic said, adding that Serbia does not have enough foreign direct investments and that the transfers from abroad have reduced.
Soskic pointed out that there is no precisely determined value of the dinar that NBS will defend as its main goal is to maintain price stability, and added that the central bank also maintains the stability of the financial system.
Soskic said that he does not want to predict the future dinar movements against the euro, stressing that they will depend on the supply-demand ratio at the interbank foreign exchange market, and the central bank will intervene primarily to prevent excessive daily volatility of the exchange rate.
