The Serbian Red Cross (SRC) delivered to Japan USD 850.000 worth of aid it has raised so far, SRC Secretary General Vesna Milenovic stated on Wednesday.
The aid for the people of Japan, which was recently hit by an earthquake and tsunami, was raised through donations which were transferred to SRC's bank-account by March 23, Milenovic told Tanjug.
She explained that although the Serbian government is expected to donate RSD 50 million for this purpose, SRC did not want to put off the transfer of aid funds any longer because of the difficult circumstances Japan is facing.
Milenovic noted that the government's donation will be transferred on March 29 and that SRC would forward it to Japan's Red Cross immediately.
Largest donations worth RSD 25 million each were made by the City of Belgrade and the Vojvodina government.
Belgrade's public enterprises donated over RSD 7 million, followed by municipalities of Zvezdara, Barajevo and Cukarica and the town of Paracin, east-central Serbia.
A total of 114 companies and numerous citizens of Serbia made donations and so helped raise aid for Japan, Milenovic said.
