On the occasion of the European Day for Organ Donation and Transplantation, the Ministry organised today in Belgrade the campaign “Make Life Longer" and the participants marked the importance of donation and organ transplantation with a walk through Knez Mihailova street to Trg republike square.

Minister of Health Zoran Stankovic said that so far 70,000 donor cards have been issued in Serbia and this year 48 organ transplantations were done.

Stankovic pointed out that Serbia’s needs by far exceed 70,000 since Serbia needs between one million and two million of organ donors.

I think that Serbian citizens are determined to help and I expect that we will soon, with a better organisation and campaign, reach the required number of donor cards, the Minister of Health pointed out.

The Minister of Health added that for Serbia's membership in the Eurotransplant programme and putting patients on the European list for organ transplantation, the investment of several hundred thousand euros is needed.

Belgrade Archbishop Stanislav Hocevar said that the church supports organ donation as a noble act that shows responsibility and solidarity among people.

Those interested could apply for a donor card and a legacy donation today at Trg republike and all who wish to take part can obtain information on tel. number 0800/111-800.
