Serbian Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Bozidar Djelic met in Warsaw on Monday with Polish Deputy Prime Minister Waldemar Pawlakwill and discussed with him the European future of Serbia.

Poland, which currently chairs the European Union, is strongly committed to the European future of the Western Balkan region, and particularly to granting Serbia EU candidate status.

The upper and lower house of the Polish Parliament, Senat and Sejm, ratified the Agreement on Stabilisation and Association (SAA) with Serbia late in October, an act which Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced during his May visit to Belgrade.

Poland's Secretary of State for European Affairs Mikolaj Dowgielewicz said earlier that as the chair of the EU, Poland will in the next few weeks focus on the activities regarding the Union's enlargement. That also includes granting Serbia candidate status, start of pre-accession talks for Montenegro and continuation of talks with Turkey, he added.

Poland has backed the stand of the European Commission and the recommendation that Serbia be given candidate status. However, the prerequisite for start of pre-accession talks is an improvement of relations with Kosovo.
