Serbian Police Director Milorad Veljovic visited a part of the Gendarmerie unit in the Ground Safety Zone on the administrative line with Kosovo-Metohija, and commended its members on their successful performance of exceptionally difficult tasks.
He underscored that the Serbian police, including the Gendarmerie and other units, constitutes a stability factor both in Serbia and the wider region.
After visiting the units in the villages of Muhovac and Car, Veljovic noted that more attention needs to be paid to people who are capable of performing their tasks under exceptionally difficult conditions.
As the Gendarmerie Commander, Veljovic and police general Bratislav Dikic conferred with the members of the unit over the problems they are facing in the everyday work and their tasks.
Dikic recalled that protection of citizens' security, countering organised crime and terrorism and securing the administrative line with Kosovo-Metohija are the main tasks of the gendarmerie.
The 402 kilometres' long administrative line with Kosovo-Metohija is protected by around 900 police officers, including 500 members of the Gendarmerie.
According to the report which local unit chiefs submitted to Veljovic and Dikic, around 10.500 illegal crossing attempts were recorded on the administrative line and the state border with Macedonia.
Presenting the work of the Command Operations Centre, head of the Gendarmerie told reporters that the security situation in the Ground Safety Zone near the administrative line is stable.
Dikic added that there are no aggravating factors which could jeopardise the peace in the Ground Safety Zone, pointing out that the authorities have established good cooperation with the local population, members of the Serbian Armed Forces and KFOR on the other side of the administrative line.
