Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has dismissed several officers of the federal security service FSB in connection with the suicide bomb attack at Domodedovo airport, the press secretary of the head of state Natalia Timakova confirmed to Itar-Tass.

"On behalf of the president the head of the FSB presented to him a list of officers responsible for errors in the work, who were dismissed due to improper execution of their duties," she said.

"Currently, the investigation is continuing, and if during this process other security officials through whose fault that crime was made possible are identified, they will also be punished," Timakova added.

On January 26, Medvedev at a special meeting on transport security said that he had sacked the head of the transport police in the Central District of Andrei Alexeyev. The head of state demanded that Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev should "shake up the whole transport police force."

In turn, Nurgaliyev reported to the president that gross misconduct and abuse of discipline led to the dismissal of acting chief of the Domodedovo transport police chief Colonel Alexander Trushanin, his acting first deputy, head of the criminal police Lieutenant-Colonel Alexander Budtsov, as well as acting deputy chief of the Domodedovo transport police force’s public security department, Major Alexander Degterev.

The terrorist attack in the arrivals lounge at Domodedovo airport was committed on January 24. The explosive device that went off was fixed, according to preliminary information, on the belt of a suicide bomber. The blast killed 36 people and injured about 200 others.

The chief of the militant underground in the North Caucasus Doku Umarov claimed responsibility.
