Russian could give up on the idea on building South Stream pipeline, if it faces some overwhelming obstacles, and the alternative could be the construction of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) plant on the Black Sea, said Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
“The LPG plant will be concomitant part of the South Stream project. However, if we face some overwhelming obstacles, then this constituent part could turn into an absolute alternative to the project,” Peskov was cited by Komersant.
After the Kremlin talks where Turkey did not approve the construction of the pipeline, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin said that Moscow is looking for a variant to cut the price of the project, including some alternatives for natural gas shipments to Europe.
“Gazprom and the government are currently studying various options that would allow minimizing expenses while implementing the South Stream project. An option that stipulates the construction of an LNG plant at the Black Sea may become an addition or an alternative to the pipeline option," Sechin told the newspaper.
