A coal mine explosion killed at least 11 people and left two missing and 16 injured in northeastern China on Thursday, a local official said.

The explosion happened in the city of Baishan in Jilin province, said Li Ruike, a spokesman for the provincial government.

He said he had no further details.

2,433 people died in coal mine accidents in China in 2010, according to official statistics.
